Common mistakes I keep seeing
If you're responsible for the tables at a club, training center, or tournament venue, this checklist is for you. I've spent four years on the quality side of table tennis equipment, reviewing roughly 200 JOOLA tables a year before they ship. This is the same seven-step checklist I use on a single JOOLA wood ping pong table and on a full venue setup for the JOOLA table tennis tournament 2025 season. It takes about fifteen minutes per table.
Who should use this checklist
Anyone who has to say 'yes' before a table gets used. Maybe you're a venue manager, a tournament organizer, or the coach who got handed the job because nobody else volunteered. You don't need a lab. You need a spirit level, a standard ball, a strong light, and a ruler.
And yes, I apply the same standard to a one-table community center as to a 20-table event hall. Small doesn't mean unimportant. It means a failure costs you a bigger share of your playing time.
Step 1: Check the legs and frame first
Most people start with the playing surface. I don't.
The frame determines whether the surface can stay true under play. Set the table in its playing position and check:
- All four legs make solid contact with the floor. Slide a piece of paper under each leg. If it slides freely, the table is rocking.
- Wheels, if present, are locked and not partially supporting the weight.
- The folding mechanism is fully engaged and doesn't move when you push the center of the playing surface.
A table that rocks changes the effective height of the playing surface with every point. Period.
Step 2: Level, not just flat
A table can look flat in a room that is not level. The playing surface height is an official requirement. Per ITTF Technical Leaflet T1, the playing surface should be 76 cm high. Set the table, then use a spirit level across the length and diagonally.
If the bubble is not centered, adjust the leg levelers before you go any further. I've inspected tables that passed the bounce test but sat 2 cm lower on one side. Players feel that.
Step 3: Inspect the surface with low-angle light
Direct light from straight above hides pretty much every scratch, dent, and bubble. Low-angle light shows the truth.
Hold a strong light source close to the surface and look down the length of the table. What I mean is: the light should be almost parallel to the playing surface. Any uneven patch will stand out as a shadow.
What to look for:
- Scratches in the playing zone, not just at the edges
- Bubbles under the surface finish
- Chips along the sideline that could affect ball contact
- Paint defects on the white lines
The table should have a uniform appearance across its 2.74 m length. If you see a visible patch, it won't bounce the same as the area next to it.
Step 4: Do the bounce test in multiple spots
This is the step I've seen missed by experienced venue managers. They check the table visually, run a hand over it, and call it good. Then a player serves and the ball dies in the middle.
Drop a standard table tennis ball from 30 cm above the playing surface. On a good table, it rebounds to roughly 23 cm. Do this at the center, near the net, and at each corner.
Why do I care about multiple spots? Because a table can bounce perfectly at the edges while the center is soft. The center is where the most gameplay happens.
In Q1 2024, I rejected a batch of forty tables because the center bounce was off by 4 cm. The vendor called it 'within industry tolerance.' The fix cost them a redo. The upside of rushing this step is saving ten minutes. The risk is a player losing a point and blaming the table. I ask myself every time: is ten minutes worth that?
Step 5: Check the net assembly and post position
Net height is another official spec: 15.25 cm at the center, measured after the net is tensioned. The posts should be set 15.25 cm beyond the side lines, not clamped directly onto the apron in a way that shortens the playing width.
Pull on the net gently at the center. There should be no repeatable sag after you adjust it. Also check the posts for rust or bent clamping parts. This is common in humid club storage.
Step 6: Inspect the folding mechanism, locks, and safety edges
This section is usually forgotten because it's about the table when it's not being played.
Fold the table halfway and check that the safety lock engages. If the lock is worn, the table can collapse while someone is setting it up. In a club with children or older players, that's a liability. Look for sharp edges on the underside and any exposed mechanism parts that could pinch fingers.
Also check the wheels. If the table has to be moved between a storage room and a playing area, bad wheels will cause the frame to twist over time. A twisted frame will make every other inspection fail.
Step 7: Write down the result
Quality without documentation is just an opinion.
Keep a simple table log: date inspected, table number, pass/fail for each step, and initials. If a player complains about a bounce, you can check exactly which table and which surface area they mean.
Common mistakes I keep seeing
- Skipping the bounce test on the center of the table.
- Checking level only after the table is moved, not in its final position.
- Using a phone flashlight instead of a low-angle light and missing surface defects.
- Assuming a new table is perfect before assembly. New tables from storage can arrive with shifted frames from transport.
- Failing to re-check after the table has been set up overnight. Temperature and humidity changes affect wood-frame tables more than people expect.
If you run a smaller venue, don't let anyone make you feel like your standards should be lower. A beat-up table in a community gym still counts. It took me about 800 inspections to understand that the most important thing isn't the brand name on the table—it's whether someone actually spent fifteen minutes checking it before play started.
